THE GYPSY SET TO PRESENT BODY ART SERIES
Master Tattoo Artist, The Gypsy, will be presenting a four-part
educational series on Body Art this November at Independence
Community College. Aka James George of Independence, the
renowned tattoo artist and Governor appointed member of the
Kansas Board of Cosmetology, is one of only 27 people in the
world certified as a Master Tattoo Artist.
The four-part evening lecture series will be held from 7:00-9:00
p.m. in Cessna Learning Center West on ICC’s main campus
beginning on Monday, November 2nd. The series will continue once
a week through November 23rd. Cost of the complete series is $75
or students may enroll in individual sessions of interest for
$20 per session.
This seminar series is open to all interested persons and will
have direct benefit for those considering having work done for
the first time to persons seeking information about body art as
a profession, and everyone in between.
“Tattooing is an expression and art form but there are standards
of safety and there has to be education in the market to keep
those standards,” said The Gypsy, when asked about the seminar
series. "I feel that I can help to promote education in the art
form. There is a lot that people should know as they consider
getting tattooed and that includes everything from how do I find
a reputable artist to choosing where to have the work done on
your body. Tattooing and piercing are the world’s oldest art
forms but there is no sense in keeping the practice archaic and
ancient in today’s world. I promote safety, common sense and
artistic value.”
A museum exhibited artist, The Gypsy has over 34 years of
experience as a body artist and has garnered international
recognition and awards. The Gypsy owns and operates the Skin Art
Creations Tattoo Emporium at 110 West Main Street in
Independence. The business is the oldest, established, licensed
studio in southeast Kansas and the longest serving tattoo studio
for the states of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri in the United
States. Since 1994, he has been a professional member of the
Alliance of Professional Tattooists, an organization founded to
promote education of the craft and standardize infection control
and safety procedures.
Seminar sessions are scheduled as: November 2nd Introduction to
Body Art. In this first session, The Gypsy will discuss what
body art is and what it is not. He’ll address the many myths of
the art and present the facts. He also plans to discuss his
background and how he has built his career in the body art
business.
The second session, scheduled for Wednesday, November 11th, is
entitled A History of Body Art. In this segment The Gypsy will
present a program on the fascinating history of the world’s
oldest art form. From its earliest beginnings to its present
form and what the future holds for the art. Discussion will
include all areas of Body Art, including the topics of
tattooing, piercing, and branding.
The third session, Body Art Safety, will be held on Monday,
November 16th. In this session the lecture will deal with Body
Art Safety. What someone should know before entering a studio,
the questions they should ask, what the customer’s legal
obligation is and the legal obligations of the studio artist.
The Gypsy will also discuss the diseases and disorders
associated with Body Art work.
The fourth and final part of the series is entitled So, You Want
to Become a Body Artist. In this segment, The Gypsy will reveal
